I guess it was just a matter of time. A center geared towards helping people with developmental disabilities and severe mental illness has been targeted by domestic terrorists. You don’t get dressed up in body armor and organize with other people to carry out a random act of violence.
You do that to prove some warped point, usually grown out of hate or ignorance.
Earlier this week, it was an attack on Planned Parenthood. Earlier today, it was an attack on a women’s center in Texas. Last week, locally, it was attack on the Black Lives Movement. There have been over 350 mass shootings this year alone.
Right now, I’m wondering what sort of warped justification these people will give. Eugenics? I can’t think of any other reason to target a center like this.
In a way, it doesn’t matter.
In another, it does. Motivation comes from broken cultural ideals, and the only way we’ll learn what they are is to learn about why acts of terror are carried out. I fully believe common sense gun control (mandatory education, better background checks, etc) is needed, but there’s far more to the overall problem than that.
In the meantime, I’m going to give a few thoughts:
- These shooters are domestic terrorists. They always have a political agenda, and they should be addressed accordingly. They are only addressed differently because of their skin color.
- Mental illness is rarely, if ever, a valid reason for their behavior. The only time the mental illness argument is ever valid is when the suspect had no control over their behavior. These terrorists always put planning into their actions, especially the ones in California.
- People with mental illness are far more likely to be the victims of violence than the perpetrators.
- Remember to always respect the victims. Those who are injured or killed have absolutely no control over their attackers.
Like so many others right now, I feel sick to my stomach.
There’s little more that I can do right at the moment than extend my sympathies to all communities effected, and send out a heartfelt wish for peace.
