HomeautismIs it a Meltdown or is it a Tantrum?

Recently, a news story caught my eye. It was titled something like, “Toddler Meltdowns May Not Be the Parents’ Fault”. Immediately, I thought, “Wow. Will they actually talk about SPD?”

Of course not.

The story ended up being a five minute segment on an unnamed study about how some kids are genetically predisposed to being more aggressive than others. It went on to say that tantrums aren’t entirely the parents’ fault, but they still need to address behavioral problems. I don’t have a whole lot of faith in the story, either, since it didn’t give the name of the study or who did it.

Whoever came up with the hook obviously didn’t know the difference between a tantrum and a meltdown.

Anyway, I figured I’d put together a graphic to illustrate the differences between the two as a way to spread awareness.

Hopefully, this will help people learn how to differentiate between the two!
